Solution-Oriented Assumptions

1. Social reality is co-created.
2. Resistance is not a useful concept. Cooperation is inevitable.
3. Change is inevitable. Rapid resolution of complaints is probable.
4. Small change is all that is necessary, a change in one part of a system affects change in other parts of the system.
5. Clients have resources to solve problems. They are the experts.
6. You don't need to know a great deal about the problem to solve it.

7. Clients define goals.
8. There are many ways to look at a situation, none more "correct" than others.
9. Meanings are negotiable;choose meanings that lead to change.

H “Hot techniques”: Describe the solution-focused techniques used to construct solutions and their outcomes. Describe the uses of techniques such as miracle question, relationship questions, uses of metaphors and language, and any creative interventions based on these methods

E Exceptions to the problem: List exceptions generated during the session.

L Learning Tasks: Describe the tasks and homework assignments given in the session.

P Positive Compliments: List major compliments given and note the ones that seemed most salient to the client.

S Scaling: Describe the results of scaling questions and summarize the progress the client is making towards goals.


Scaling questions

“On a scale from 0 to 10, with 1 being XXXX and 10 being XXXX, how would you rate X today?”

Type of scaling questions:

1. Pre-session change : 0 represents how things were when client called to make the first appointment, 10 represents the miracle or how things would be if therapy was successful

2. Tracking progress: use same question every week to set goals and monitor change

3. Motivation: 1 represents not willing to do anything to make change, 10 represents being willing to do whatever it takes to find a solution

4. Confidence: 1 represents no confidence that they can change, 10 represents totally sure the changes will happen

5. Relationships: 1 represents no confidence that significant other will notice change, 10 represents being sure that others will notice change.
